All over the world, people are getting fat, and it’s not their fault. It’s the phones. It’s the tablets. It’s the Wi-Fi. It’s the cell towers. It’s everything wireless.
Research shows that microwaves from wireless technology damage the glands that regulate our appetites, making people overeat. They can also harm the thyroid leading to weight gain–whether you eat too much or not.
Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions. By 2012, according to Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy in his paper, “The Biological Effects of Weak Electromagnetic Fields: Problems and Solutions”, eight out of ten people in the UK were technically obese, which means they weighed at least 40 percent more than they ought to. And it’s not just the UK, either.
The problem, says Goldsworthy, is weak electromagnetic fields such as those given off by cell towers, cell phones and Wi-Fi. “Our present exposure to microwaves,” says Goldsworthy, “is about a million billion billion (one followed by eighteen zeroes) times greater than our natural exposure to these frequencies.” We didn’t evolve under these circumstances, so it isn’t surprising that most of us can’t adapt to them, or that they are affecting our health.
These electromagnetic fields damage glands that control the endocrine system and interfere with the production of two important appetite-regulating hormones, ghrelin and peptide YY. Ghrelin, which is produced in the stomach, makes you feel hungry. Peptide YY, which is produced in the intestine, makes you feel full so that you stop eating. If your body doesn’t regulate these hormones correctly, you will be constantly hungry and you will not know when to stop eating. You will get fat, even obese.
The thyroid gland, which is in an exposed part of the neck, is easily damaged by microwaves from wireless technology. One of the first symptoms of a damaged thyroid gland is weight gain. In a 2010 experiment with rats, Esmekaya et al. found visible deterioration of the thyroid gland when the rats were exposed to 2G cell phone radiation for a mere 20 minutes a day for three weeks. Since modern smartphones have multiple antennas, some of which point directly at the thyroid gland when the phone is held next to the head, it is not surprising that many people nowadays are suffering from hypothyroidism to varying degrees. The more time they spend on the phone, the longer they are irradiating their thyroid glands.
Damage to the thyroid gland can also be caused by living near a cell tower. Eskander et al. (2012) found that people living near cell towers showed reduction of many hormones in the blood, especially thyroid hormone. Other hormones which were affected included ACTH (from the pituitary gland), cortisol, prolactin and testosterone. These findings do not bode well for 5G small cells, since one in five people will be living with a miniature cell tower outside their homes.
If your thyroid gland is malfunctioning, you will gain weight even if you don’t overeat. You can diet, but you won’t lose weight. If prolonged exposure to microwaves limits the release of ghrelin and peptide YY, your body will be unable to regulate your appetite.
Goldsworthy says, “If you are affected in this way, you may be forced to go on a life-long diet, undergo gastric bypass surgery to drastically reduce the size of your stomach, or risk the many serious diseases that stem from obesity, AND IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAULT.”
How does this happen? Even when they are not strong enough to heat tissues, microwaves generate alternating currents that easily pass through cell membranes. Weak electromagnetic fields remove structurally important calcium ions from the cell membranes, and these calcium ions then leak into the cytosol, the main part of the cell. The cell realizes it is damaged, and it tries to repair itself. This costs the cell energy and resources, so if the damage is prolonged, the cell may run out of resources to keep repairing itself and give up or even die.
Microwaves cause damage in two ways. First, they can damage blood cells which, circulating within the body, can affect glands or organs. Second, they can directly damage the surface membranes of glands or organs. “Gland cells,” says Goldsworthy, “may be particularly sensitive to radiation because their secretions are normally produced in internal membrane systems, which can also be damaged.”
When a gland is damaged by long-term exposure to microwaves, it stops functioning normally, and may even stop working altogether. Lack of glandular function is especially serious for our endocrine system, which regulates our metabolism. And if our metabolism stops functioning normally, we gain weight.
Our bodies’ natural defences try to limit damage from electromagnetic fields, but having to constantly repair this damage consumes extra energy and disrupts normal cell functions. Cell towers and Wi-Fi run continuously, disrupting metabolisms for long periods until they reach a point where they can’t recover.
We can control some of our exposure to microwaves, by not using wireless devices such as cell phones, smartphones, tablets or Wi-Fi. We can’t control all of our exposure, though, as long as there are cell towers, or as long as we are exposed to public Wi-Fi or other people’s Wi-Fi. It is an unfortunate fact that in any town or city, you may not have Wi-Fi in your own home but may still be exposed to Wi-Fi from local businesses or other nearby homes. One man in New York City counted over 300 Wi-Fi signals in his apartment, many of which were full-strength.
The only way, ultimately, to solve the problem of obesity induced by glandular malfunction from microwaves is to put an end to wireless technologies. Governments must be made to realize how much these technologies affect health, and that the cost of treating people for wireless-induced health problems far exceeds the profits governments make from licensing telecommunications infrastructure. Obesity, which can cause diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac problems, renal failure and cancer, was estimated in 2007 as costing the UK government between 6.6 and 7.4 billion pounds annually. How much has that figure risen since then? What will it rise to when 5G comes in? What will it cost governments when the total health expenses of wireless technologies are added up?
What people can do, if they find themselves gaining weight, is to limit their exposure to wireless technologies whenever possible: don’t use a smartphone, and turn off the Wi-Fi. But it isn’t always easy to persuade other people to do this, because electromagnetic fields also affect the adrenal gland, which releases cortisol and adrenalin that put the body into “fight or flight” mode. This in turn induces a sort of adrenalin rush, a “high” or “buzz” that many people enjoy and which, Goldsworthy says, may be at least part of the reason why people find wireless technologies so addictive.
Wireless technologies may be the primary factor driving the current outbreak of obesity. The consequences are costly both in health and economic terms, as well as affecting many people’s self-image.
